Syrah

Syrah is the source of the Rhone Valley’s lucious red wines like Cote Rotie. In the rolling hills of central Tuscany, Syrah produces wines of combining body and elegance with a distinct hint of black pepper and other spices in the flavor. The Villa Pillo Syrah is grown in our three vineyard sites of Palazzaccio, Sanguigno and Peretola which lie to the east of the “Via Volterrana” the historical trade route which passes through the Pillo Estate. The vines are trained on a vertical trellis to allow management of growing shoots and favour the development of colour and flavour in the grapes. Spur pruning in the Winter followed by further selection of fruit producing shoots in the Spring ensures an optimum control of yield and quality. We harvest this grape at the peak of ripeness to enhance these classic traits. It is then aged in small oak barrels. The variety Syrah at Pillo expresses itself as a wine with a deep dark colour, aromas which combine notes of leather, blackberry, chocolate and white pepper. Flavours are firm and broad but have a degree of suppleness which gives the wine an easy drinkability even when young. We recommend this wine with grilled meats, roasts and flavorful pasta dishes.
